Example of Lacking Conservation: Pizza Slices
An example of a child in the preoperational stage lacking an understanding of conservation involves a slice of pizza. If a 3-year-old child's single slice of pizza is cut into five pieces, they might incorrectly conclude that they have more pizza than someone who has an uncut slice of the same size, because they judge the quantity based on the appearance of more pieces rather than understanding that the total amount remains equal.
