Example of Misinterpreting Negative Correlation: Coffee and Breast Cancer

A study found a negative correlation between coffee consumption and breast cancer, indicating that women who consumed more than five cups of coffee daily were less likely to develop the disease compared to those who never drank coffee. A media headline stating "Coffee Protects Against Cancer" would be misleading because it erroneously infers a causal relationship from correlational data. Although the variables are inversely related, this does not guarantee that coffee consumption directly prevents cancer, as other factors could be involved.
