Example of Selective Attention: The Cocktail Party Effect
A common illustration of attention's role in perception is seen in a scenario like a bustling party. An individual can focus intently on a conversation with a friend, effectively tuning out the surrounding music and chatter. In this situation, although the auditory system senses the background noise, the person does not consciously perceive it. If asked to identify a song that had just played, they would likely be unable to, demonstrating how attention selects specific sensory information for perception.
