Example of Seligman's Learned Helplessness Experiments with Dogs (Seligman & Maier, 1967 Study)

In classic 1960s experiments, dogs were placed in a chamber where they received inescapable electric shocks. When later given the opportunity to escape the shocks by jumping over a partition, most failed to even try, passively accepting the shocks. In contrast, dogs previously allowed to escape the shocks easily jumped the partition and escaped (Seligman & Maier, 1967).
