Decades of research, such as the study by Festinger, Schachler, & Back (1950), have demonstrated the power of proximity in forming friendships. These studies show that individuals are far more likely to become friends with people who live in the same dormitory, apartment building, or immediate neighborhood compared to those who live farther away.
