Example of Triangulation: Sense of Belonging
An illustrative example of triangulation is Trenor and colleagues' (2008) study investigating female engineering students' sense of belonging. Initially, a quantitative survey indicated no statistical differences in belonging across ethnic groups. However, subsequent qualitative interviews revealed that minority students felt the university's cultural diversity actively enhanced their sense of belonging. This study demonstrates how using a qualitative component can clarify quantitative results via triangulation and prevent researchers from drawing inaccurate conclusions.
