Examples of Access Washing

Some examples of access washing could be, but are not limited to:

  • The citing of the Americans with Disabilities Act to close down inaccessible polling places while those polling places may be the only nearby polling places in Black communities. This practice was called out in Georgia by Stacy Abrams.
  • Retrofitting older structures with ramps, new washrooms, elevators, and other accessibility functions that increase the price evaluation of a space and therefore aid in the gentrification of poor, working class and BIPOC communities. Gentrification pushes out disabled community members who can be income limited by SSDI policies and unable to afford more expensive housing costs.
  • Cities instituting street clearing and other anti-homelessness measures like anti-homelessness architecture under the guise that it makes streets and bus stops more accessible for disabled individuals who need wider sidewalks. However, unhoused populations are more likely to be disabled than the general public.
  • Situating artificial intelligence as an access tool for individuals who need help with executive functioning without looking critically at how the climate change impacts of AI usage will have a disproportionate impact on disabled people who cannot as easily leave their home communities during environmental disasters.
