Examples of Funeral and Burial Practices

Different cultures handle the remains of the deceased in various ways, reflecting diverse beliefs about death. Common practices include burial in a cemetery, where gravestones mark the resting place (Figure a); cremation followed by the scattering of ashes, such as at sea (Figure b); and open-air cremation on a funeral pyre, a ritual observed in some cultures (Figure c).
