Exclusion and Estimation of Illegal Activities in US GDP

The United States generally excludes illegal economic activities from its official Gross Domestic Product (GDP) calculations. However, research from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) provides insight into the scale of this unmeasured sector. A 2017 estimate valued these activities—including drug consumption, prostitution, gambling, and business theft—at 1.67% of the nation's nominal GDP.
