Expected Versus Unexpected Panic Attacks
Panic attacks can be expected, occurring in response to a specific environmental trigger (e.g., being in a tunnel), or unexpected, emerging randomly without an apparent cause (e.g., while relaxing). According to the DSM-5, a person must experience unexpected panic attacks to qualify for a diagnosis of panic disorder (APA, 2013).
