Explaining Electrical Problems in Everyday Language

Most customers do not know electrical trade terms, so the technician should translate the finding into plain speech. Use familiar wording such as “the main switch” instead of a technical label and “the wire is too small for the amount of power it carries” instead of a code-based calculation. After naming the issue, explain both sides of the impact: what could go wrong if nothing is done and what the customer gains if the repair is completed. For example, you might say, “This breaker is worn out and may fail to protect the circuit. If we leave it alone, the lights may keep shutting off unexpectedly; if we replace it, the system will run more reliably and safely.”
