Explaining Historical Labor Trends

Historically, as wages have risen in many developed economies, the average number of hours worked per week has tended to fall. At the same time, it is common to observe some highly-paid individuals working extremely long hours. A wage increase creates two opposing pressures on an individual's choice between work and free time: one that encourages more free time and another that encourages less. Analyze how these two conflicting pressures can explain both of the observed labor market outcomes.
