Explaining Social Change in a Local Economy

A historic town's economy was once dominated by local, family-run artisan shops, creating a highly integrated community. This changes when a large, non-local corporation opens a factory, offering higher wages. Many residents leave traditional work for jobs at the factory, where their roles are specialized and disconnected from the town's social life. Decades later, sociologists observe a marked decline in community participation and a reported increase in social isolation among residents.

Based on the theory that social atomization results from organizing economic life through anonymous, impersonal market structures, evaluate the strength of this theory in explaining the social decline in the town. In your evaluation, consider both the aspects of the scenario that the theory explains well and any potential limitations or alternative factors it might overlook.
