Explaining the Shape of Altruistic Preferences

Imagine a person who gains satisfaction not only from their own share of a resource but also from another person's share. If we were to plot all the combinations of their share and the other person's share that result in the exact same level of total satisfaction for this individual, the resulting curve would slope downwards. Explain the reasoning behind this downward slope.
