Factors of a Number

In the expression aba \cdot b, both aa and bb are called factors. If ab=ma \cdot b = m and both aa and bb are integers, then aa and bb are factors of mm. For instance, because 89=728 \cdot 9 = 72, both 88 and 99 are factors of 7272. A single number can have many factor pairs: 7272 can also be written as 1721 \cdot 72, 2362 \cdot 36, 3243 \cdot 24, 4184 \cdot 18, or 6126 \cdot 12, giving the complete list of factors of 7272 as 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,12,18,36,1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 36, and 7272. Saying that aa is a factor of mm is simply another way of stating that mm is divisible by aa or that mm is a multiple of aa.
