Concept

Family Involvement in Therapeutic Care for Black Americans with OCD

One clinic observed that their black patients were less likely to include their family in their compulsive rituals (such as repeatedly asking family members to wash their hands due to contamination). A patient of theirs canceled treatment altogether rather than allowing their therapist to speak to their family about how to support their behavioral therapy. The clinic eventually came to the conclusion that it was better to coach black patients on how to broach the topic to their family on their own terms, rather than insisting on face-to-face meetings with the family.
