Fana and Baqa in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 41, Poem 23)
In Chapter 41, Poem 23 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the poet articulates the core Sufi states of fana (annihilation) and baqa (subsistence). The poem illustrates that as the soul is annihilated ('fani') on the spiritual path, all that remains is the eternal subsistence ('baqi') of the Divine. The call to the Cupbearer (Sāqī) further signifies the desire for spiritual intoxication to facilitate this complete loss of self.
