Fana and Baqa in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 8, Poem 58)

In Poem 58 of Chapter 8 in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the poet articulates the core Sufi stages of fana (annihilation of the self) and baqa (subsistence in the Divine). Through a brief dialogue, the speaker describes a profound state of self-effacement, to which the Divine responds with a promise of eternal subsistence. Attar's verses clarify the mystical paradox that true, spiritual existence is only showered upon the seeker once they have fully realized and embraced their own non-existence.
