The Fast (Sawm) section of Hujwiri's Kashf al-Mahjub distills fasting into a uniquely hidden, or secret, act of worship. Building on the Quranic command to fast (al-Baqara 183) and the divine saying 'the fast is Mine and I alone reward it' (al-sawm li wa ana ajzi bihi), Hujwiri reasons that because fasting attaches to no outward action and leaves no share for anyone but God, its reward is without limit. He cites the tradition that entry into Paradise comes by God's mercy, one's rank by worship, and eternal abiding by the reward of fasting, and he quotes Junayd that fasting is half of the mystical path (tariqa). He further contrasts the masters who fasted perpetually in hope of reward with those who fasted only in Ramadan, renouncing their own will.
