A defensible recommendation requires identifying a preferred course of action, articulating an associated tradeoff, acknowledging uncertainty, and defining a next verification check. In decision-making scenarios with multiple viable paths under set constraints, more than one conditional recommendation may be defensible.

Components of a Defensible Recommendation

A recommendation is only as persuasive as the competing alternatives it surpasses. To maintain credibility, a proposal must compare genuine choices rather than relying on weak "straw man" options that nobody would select. A sound option set includes doing nothing—which carries its own implicit costs—along with at least one viable, serious alternative that a reasonable decision-maker might genuinely prefer.
