Findings from retrospective review of elderly patients receiving either amlodipine or nifedipine

In patients that received either amlodipine or nifedipine, 12 survived (50%) and 12 expired (50%)
In patients that did not receive either of theses drugs, 6 survived (14.6%) and 35 expired (85.4%)
Among the patients that survived, 67% were successfully discharged from the hospital and had received either amlodipine or nifedipine
Among the patients that expired, 74% did not receive either of these drugs
In the group receiving either amlodipine or nifedipine, only one patient was intubated and medically ventilated while in the other group, 16 required ventilation
Other sample medications (antibiotics and steroids) that were administered to patients in both groups were not significantly different
