Concept
Findings from retrospective review of elderly patients receiving either amlodipine or nifedipine
- In patients that received either amlodipine or nifedipine, 12 survived (50%) and 12 expired (50%)
- In patients that did not receive either of theses drugs, 6 survived (14.6%) and 35 expired (85.4%)
- Among the patients that survived, 67% were successfully discharged from the hospital and had received either amlodipine or nifedipine
- Among the patients that expired, 74% did not receive either of these drugs
- In the group receiving either amlodipine or nifedipine, only one patient was intubated and medically ventilated while in the other group, 16 required ventilation
- Other sample medications (antibiotics and steroids) that were administered to patients in both groups were not significantly different
