Fixed-Price Versus Time-and-Materials Billing for Service Work

Service jobs are often billed in one of two ways: a fixed price for a clearly defined task, or time-and-materials billing, where labor is charged by time and parts are billed at cost. Fixed-price billing works best when the scope is predictable and the work can be estimated reliably. Time-and-materials billing is better when the repair path is uncertain, the diagnosis may change, or the final labor time is difficult to predict. Many service businesses use both approaches, choosing the billing method that fits the job.
