Fleet Modernization and Scale Economies

A global logistics firm is planning to update its shipping fleet. The current fleet consists of ten smaller vessels. The proposed plan is to replace them with two 'super-carrier' vessels that, combined, offer the same total cargo capacity. From a purely physical and geometric standpoint, this change is expected to significantly reduce the total amount of steel required for construction and the total fuel needed for propulsion per unit of cargo. Critically evaluate the firm's proposal. In your answer, first explain the underlying principle that creates this potential cost saving, and then discuss at least two potential real-world operational or logistical challenges that might counteract these savings.
