Fragmented Memory in a Rape Victim

A rape victim who cannot coherently remember the traumatic event may recall only isolated fragments, such as the attacker repeating a particular word or insult. Because the memory was never fully integrated, this fragment stands out and can later surface as an intrusive memory involuntarily triggered by reminders of the attacker, such as encountering a person who resembles them.
