Lavandula stoechas is commonly known as French lavender, but in the USA it is also called Spanish lavender. Lavandula stoechas has the most showy flowers as long, larger petals (bracts) at the top of each spike, or inflorescence. 
- Lavandula stoechas has a more “resinous” scent than English lavender; it is very strong but less “sophisticated”. It is not usually used for oil or essential oil.
It is less resilient than English lavender, so it is inappropriate for colder climates.

English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), formerly known as  Lavandula officinalis, is one of the most common types of lavender. This type is more vigorous than other types. This type is so hardy that can even grow in Britain. So it is called "English".

Broadleaved lavender, spiked lavender, or Lavandula latifolia is also known as Portuguese lavender. 
This type of lavender comes from the Mediterranean and is known for its scent and aromatic properties
- The fragrance of Portuguese lavender is very strong but less valuable than that of English lavender.

Portuguese Lavender (Lavandula latifolia)

Lavandin(Lavandula x intermedia) is a hybrid plant of English lavender and Portuguese lavender (Lavandula angustifolia with Lavandula latifolia). This type is the most fragrant lavender species. Blossoms have a limited spectrum around the blue, violet, or lilac.
 - The smell is strong, but “soapy”; it has herbal overtones (sometimes even minty) and a camphor undertone.
- The spikes with the flowers tend to come in groups of three; each stem divides before the inflorescence.
