Short Answer

From Self-Sufficiency to Tenancy

Imagine a farmer who works their own land and decides how many hours to work based on their personal preference for leisure versus the amount of grain they can produce. Now, suppose a landowner takes ownership of the land, and the farmer must work for the landowner to receive a share of the harvest. From an economic perspective, what fundamental new question must be resolved in this new arrangement that was not a factor when the farmer was self-sufficient?
