Functional changes in hippocampal cortex

The amygdala functions to regulate our fight or flight responses. In many C-PTSD patients, outbursts of fear and dissociation are heavily prevalent due to the hyperactivity of the amygdala.

Functional changes in the amygdala

The ACC is responsible in regulating empathy, decision making, impulse, and emotions. The loss in this region of the brain is what results in impulsive behavior and behavioral outbursts.

Functional changes in the anterior cingulate cortex

The frontal lobe is responsible for controlling voluntary movements and language. The prefrontal cortex which is located in the frontal cortex becomes hypoactive in patients with complex PTSD which results in inability to express themselves.

The significant loss of multiple brain regions results in a dramatic loss in brain functionality. Additionally, the heightened function of the amygdala and lack of function in the frontal lobe results in a major change in the behavior of C-PTSD patients.

People with C-PTSD lose volume of  their hippocampal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). These areas of the brain are responsible for a majority of our natural emotional functions.
