Functional Distinction Between Hippocampus and Cerebellum in Memory

The hippocampus and cerebellum manage different types of memories. The hippocampus acts as a processing area for explicit memories, which are conscious recollections of facts and events. In contrast, the cerebellum is essential for creating implicit memories, such as procedural skills, motor learning, and classically conditioned responses. This means that even if the hippocampus is damaged, the ability to form new implicit memories via the cerebellum remains intact.
