External motivation will prompt the person to continue using the gamification system depending on whether the reward (i.e. point system, badges, etc) are valuable to the individual. Without any external reward system, the person would lack the motivation to continue using the system because there is nothing to gain. Intrinsic motivation would not suffice if the material is not something valuable to the individual to learn about.
