Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)

The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) is a depression assessment tool that is frequently used with the elderly population. It develops into two versions. The GDS Long Form is a 30-item questionnaire that can be used with older persons who are in good health, or have a medical condition with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. From the Long Form GDS, the 15 questions with the strongest connection to depressed symptoms were chosen to make up the Short Form GDS. Physically unwell, mildly to moderately demented, or patients who have limited attention spans may find it easier to use the Short Form. Depending on age, education, and complaints, scores of 0–4 are regarded as normal; 5-8 suggest mild depression; 9–11 indicate moderate depression; and 12–15 indicate severe depression.
