Government Spending as a Share of GDP: An International Comparison

When comparing the economic role of governments internationally, it is crucial to distinguish between government purchases of goods and services (G) and total government outlays, which include transfer payments. For instance, the share of G in GDP is relatively similar in the US and China (around 16%) and slightly higher in some European countries (just under 20%). However, a more significant divergence appears when including transfers like pensions and benefits. Data from 2019 shows total government spending, including transfers, was 55.6% of GDP in France, compared to only 38.1% in the US and 34.1% in China, highlighting different approaches to social welfare.
