Gray Matter Reduction in Schizophrenia

A common structural abnormality observed in individuals with schizophrenia is a reduction of gray matter, which contains the cell bodies of neurons, particularly within the frontal lobes. This finding is significant because the frontal lobes are responsible for complex cognitive functions like planning, attention, and problem-solving. Therefore, the loss of gray matter in this critical area helps to explain the cognitive deficits frequently observed in the disorder.
