In 1894, Margaret Floy Washburn became the first woman to get a doctorate in psychology. She wrote the book The Animal Mind: A Textbook of Comparative Psychology which was widely used for 20 years.

In the 1890s, under the guidance of William James, Mary Whiton Calkins finished all the requirements to get a doctorate in psychology from Harvard university, but the university refused to grant her the degree because she was a woman. Calkins researched topics related to memory; and wrote about structuralism and functionalism. She also established one of the first experimental psychology labs. In 1905 she became elected as the first female president of the American Psychological Association.

The first African American to receive a PhD in psychology in the United States in the year 1920. Also established a psychology degree program at Howard University, leading to the education of a new generation of African American psychologists.

Francis Cecil Sumner

In 1933, Inez Beverly Prosser was the first African American woman to get a doctorate in psychology from the University of Cincinnati. Her research comparing segregated and integrated schools was influential in the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, which declared that segregation is unconstitutional.
