Short Answer

Harvest Variability and Loan Outcomes

A lender provides a farmer with a loan of 10 bushels of grain. The farmer agrees to repay a fixed amount of 12 bushels after the harvest. The farmer keeps any grain produced beyond the repayment amount. If the harvest is less than the repayment amount, the farmer repays everything they harvested. Describe the final outcome (how much grain each person has) for both the lender and the farmer in two separate scenarios: (a) a bountiful harvest of 30 bushels, and (b) a poor harvest of 8 bushels.
