Heart Attack Risk by Depression Score Quartile and Gender (Barefoot & Schroll, 1996)
Data from the Barefoot & Schroll (1996) study illustrates how heart attack risk varies with depression severity and gender. In the lowest depression score quartile, the rate of heart attacks per 1,000 was 3 for women and 8 for men. This rate increased through the quartiles, reaching 5 per 1,000 for women and 15 per 1,000 for men in the highest quartile. Specifically, the rates for the four quartiles were: women at 3, 4, 5, and 5; and men at 8, 11, 9, and 15, respectively. In every quartile, men exhibited a higher rate of heart attacks than women.
