Concept

Heritability of Psychological Disorders

Heritability is a statistical concept that estimates how much of the variation in a trait within a population is due to genetic differences. In the context of psychopathology, different psychological disorders show varying degrees of heritability, indicating that the influence of genetic factors is stronger for some conditions than for others. Identifying the extent of heritability for various disorders is a central goal of the biological perspective on mental illness.
