Extreme Concentration of Stock and Business Equity Ownership in the Richest US Households

The ownership of stocks and business equity in the US is exceptionally concentrated within the wealthiest segment of the population. The top quartile of households, representing the richest 25%, holds 97.7% of all directly held shares and equity in businesses. In stark contrast, ownership is minimal for other groups; the poorest quartile possesses virtually none of these assets, and even the third-wealthiest quartile holds very little.
