Hippocampus's Role in the Consolidation of Explicit Memory

The hippocampus plays an essential role in memory consolidation, which is the process of transferring and stabilizing newly learned information into long-term explicit (declarative) memory. Damage to this brain structure prevents the encoding and consolidation of new facts and events into long-term storage, while leaving short-term memory, procedural skill learning, and older, already-consolidated long-term memories intact.
