Historical Economic Takeoff as the Origin of Global Income Disparities

The significant income disparities observed globally today can be traced back to historical patterns of economic growth, often visualized as 'hockey stick' graphs (like Figure 1.1). A country's current wealth is strongly linked to when it began its period of sustained economic expansion. Nations that experienced this 'economic takeoff' before 1900, including Britain, Japan, and Italy, now constitute the high-income 'skyscrapers' in the global wealth distribution (visualized in Figure 1.5). Conversely, countries whose takeoff occurred more recently, or has not yet happened, make up the low-income 'flatlands'.
