Histrionic Personality Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder
A 2018 study found by van der Wal et al. found that histrionic personality traits correlated positively with developing major depressive disorder (MDD) or dysthymia later in life. (Although previous studies had found that other personality traits characteristic of antisocial, borderline, dependent and schizotypal personality disorder also correlated positively with developing MDD, this study did not confirm those results.) The researchers hypothesized that either histrionic traits and MDD were different manifestations of the same underlying issues, or that those with histrionic traits were more inclined to overreport or exaggerate their mood symptoms during follow-up interviews. The complex relationships between personality disorder dimensions and other mental health disorders is a rich area for future study.
