Horizontal Parabola
A horizontal parabola is a parabola that opens either to the left or to the right. Its equation is derived by interchanging the and variables in the equations for vertical parabolas. Because a vertical line can intersect a horizontal parabola at more than one point, its graph fails the vertical line test and therefore does not represent a mathematical function.

You are a quality control analyst at an engineering firm reviewing a CAD model for a new radar reflector. The model's cross-section is plotted as a horizontal parabola opening to the right. To properly classify this curve in your technical documentation, you must recall its fundamental mathematical properties. Which of the following statements is true regarding this horizontal parabola?
You are a designer using a computer-aided design (CAD) tool to create a parabolic lens. If you orient the lens as a horizontal parabola on a coordinate grid, True or False: the resulting curve represents a mathematical function because it passes the vertical line test.
As a technical writer for a geometric modeling firm, you are creating a reference guide for curved support beams. Match each characteristic of a horizontal parabola with its correct technical description.
