Hormones vs. Neurotransmitters

Hormones and neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that must bind to receptors to send signals. Neurotransmitters are released in close proximity to cells with their receptors and have localized effects. In contrast, hormones are secreted into the bloodstream, travel throughout the body to affect any cells with receptors for them, and have widespread, slower, and longer-lasting effects.
