Hormoz's Rebuke of the Nurse and the Theme of Mortality in the Khosrow Nameh
In Section 20 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar depicts Hormoz's fierce rejection of the nurse's romantic schemes. When the nurse attempts to act as a go-between for Golrokh using flattery and trickery (mkar o fan), Hormoz rebukes her by pointing out her advanced age and near-approaching death. He uses the metaphor of her cotton-like white hair to state that she should prepare a cotton shroud (kafan) and coffin (gabr) for herself rather than spinning a 'trap of deceit' (panbeh-ye dam) for him. This rebuke highlights Attar's core ethical and spiritual themes: the vanity of worldly desires, the transience of youth, and the necessity of contemplating mortality.
