Although a sample correlation coefficient can be mathematically converted into a $$t$$ score to conduct a standard $$t$$-test, the correlation coefficient itself can also be treated directly as its own test statistic. Statistical software typically calculates this coefficient directly and automatically provides its associated $$p$$-value for significance testing.

When evaluating a sample correlation coefficient by converting it into a $$t$$ score, the corresponding degrees of freedom are calculated as $$N - 2$$, where $$N$$ represents the total number of paired observations within the sample.

To determine statistical significance using software output, the computed $$p$$-value for the correlation is evaluated against a pre-set alpha level. If the $$p$$-value is less than or equal to $$0.05$$, the null hypothesis is rejected, indicating a significant relationship. When calculating a correlation coefficient manually without software, statistical significance is determined by comparing the sample $$r$$ value against critical values listed in a reference table for the corresponding sample size and alpha level.
