Short Answer

How shared labels affect spreadsheet totals

Question: In an error review sheet for an audio classifier, one mislabeled clip is marked both "Noisy background" and "Wrong speaker." How does that affect the percentages shown at the bottom of the sheet?

Sample answer: Because the same clip appears in more than one category, the categories overlap instead of being mutually exclusive. As a result, the percentages across the columns do not have to sum to 100 percent and may exceed 100 percent.

Key points:

  • One item can contribute to several columns.
  • Overlapping categories are not mutually exclusive.
  • Column percentages can total more than 100 percent.

Rubric: The student must explain that the same example is counted in multiple columns, so the categories overlap and the displayed percentages may sum to more than 100 percent.
