How to Graph a Hyperbola with Center (h,k)(h, k)

To graph a hyperbola centered at (h,k)(h, k), follow a six-step procedure. Step 1: Write the equation in standard form. Step 2: Determine whether the transverse axis is horizontal or vertical by checking which variable's squared term is positive. Step 3: Identify the center (h,k)(h, k) and find the values of aa and bb. Step 4: Sketch the central rectangle centered at (h,k)(h, k) using aa and bb. Step 5: Sketch the asymptotes by drawing lines through the diagonals of the rectangle, and mark the vertices. Step 6: Draw the two branches of the hyperbola. When identifying the center, note that the standard equation contains the expressions xhx - h and yky - k, so care must be taken to read hh and kk correctly from the equation.
