How to Multiply Rational Expressions

To multiply rational expressions, follow a three-step procedure:

Step 1. Factor each numerator and denominator completely.

Step 2. Multiply the numerators and denominators.

Step 3. Simplify by dividing out common factors.

The core rule is to multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. Before multiplying, each numerator and denominator must be factored completely; after multiplying, any common factors shared by the resulting numerator and denominator are divided out.
