In this chapter of the Kashf al-Mahjub, Hujwiri reads the ritual prayer (salat) as a map of the Sufi seeker's inner path, so that each outward act corresponds to a spiritual station (maqam) unveiled to the murid. He aligns repentance (tawba) with ritual purification (tahara), attachment to the spiritual guide (pir) with facing the qibla, striving against the lower self (mujahadat al-nafs) with the standing (qiyam), perpetual remembrance (dhikr) with the recitation, humility with the bowing (ruku'), self-knowledge (ma'rifat al-nafs) with the prostration (sujud), the station of intimacy (uns) with the tashahhud, and detachment from the world and release from the bonds of the stations with the closing salutation (salam). He grounds this in the Prophet's words to Bilal, 'give us rest through the prayer' (arihna ya Bilal bi al-salat), presenting prayer as the mystic's place of longing and repose rather than mere outward observance.
