Hypotheses: Exposure to Social Media Racial Discrimination & Mental Health Among Adolescents of Color
A 2022 study by Tao and Fisher on the effects of social media-based racial discrimination on adolescents of color proposed two main hypotheses:
- Different types of social media use are associated with increased risks of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and substance use.
- Individual and vicarious (experienced by others of the same racial group) social media discrimination mediate the relationship between social media use and these mental health and substance use risks.
