Hypotheses: Exposure to Social Media Racial Discrimination & Mental Health Among Adolescents of Color

A 2022 study by Tao and Fisher on the effects of social media-based racial discrimination on adolescents of color proposed two main hypotheses:

  1. Different types of social media use are associated with increased risks of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and substance use.
  2. Individual and vicarious (experienced by others of the same racial group) social media discrimination mediate the relationship between social media use and these mental health and substance use risks.
