Copyrighted and paywalled papers are still barriers to knowledge sharing within COVID-19 research despite efforts by some institutions to make papers more accessible. Moreover, even when institutions make COVID-19 papers available, the cited literature may not be accessible. Without full and free access to all research related to coronavirus, researchers are limited in their ability to build on already existing research on COVID-19.

why not make all #COVID19 papers CC-BY? what about the articles cited by this collection? Why are those not open too? Should we not expect readers to be able to read the cited articles too?

Tweet is responding to Springer Nature’s tweet about “free access” to research on coronavirus. Willighagen points out that real accessibility to scientific papers should be done through Creative Commons licensing.
